Design Operations Lead

We’re looking for someone to take charge of forming processes, tools, culture and organisation to create conditions for our designers to deliver great value with minimum friction. About the job

User Experience & Service Design has grown fast in terms of importance and headcount in the past few years at Swedbank. As a design organisation grows, the small inefficiencies and frictions in the design work that used to be manageable in a small team starts to compound and grow to a point where it all adds up to really affect the bottom line. That’s why we’re now doubling down on ironing out the kinks in our design operation to basically build the best design organisation in all of Sweden. Design Operations (DesignOps) commands a central role in this work.

For us, DesignOps is about creating the best conditions possible for designers to get things done and enable design to create maximum value with minimum friction. Basically, making sure the design practice, the people and the projects are healthy. DesignOps activities span from making sure that everyone has a proper Sketch license to creating staffing plans and building a strong design culture.

You will lead and coordinate a small team of people who work either full time or part of their time on DesignOps tasks.

Your role

  • Lead and coordinate all work related to DesignOps and continuously work to achieve the goals set up for your area
  • Continuously review and track the health of our design organisation and act on frictions or issues that you identify
  • Coordinate and work closely with our Design Systems team
  • Help ensure that we have the right people in the right place at the right time
  • Help ensure that we produce design work of consistent and high quality
  • Help ensure we work efficiently
  • Help ensure we collaborate well with each other and other stakeholders

Typical activities

  • Help define and communicate best ways of working, fine-tuning and harmonising the design process across all design teams
  • Support professional development and inspiration for our design team
  • Support in resource planning & staffing
  • Establish routines and processes for efficient recruiting and hiring
  • Create great on-boarding and off-boarding experiences for employees and consultants
  • Make sure our designers have the tools and working environment they need
  • Maintain vendor relationships
  • Make sure templates and guidelines exist wherever needed
  • Create a framework for advocating design thinking in the broader organisation
  •  Help build a strong design culture

We think you’ll need

  • A firm grasp of what an effective, efficient and healthy design organisation looks like
  • Experience from well-functioning agile and design driven organisations
  • Experience in leading people and projects
  • A certain level of seniority that we think corresponds to minimum 5 years of experience in a design and/or digital development field
  • A capacity to take charge, tackle problems and get things done
  • A propensity to be well organised
  • A strategic mindset that enables you to envision what our design organisation and DesignOps could be in the future
  • Empathy and a willingness to truly support and help our designers
  • Great communication skills
